About

Hello, welcome to District State of Mind, a blog about DC history and culture.

My name is Sarah. District State of Mind was born out of my love of Washington, DC and history and a desire to keep my historical research skills sharp between graduating with a BA in History and American Studies in Spring 2013 and beginning my PhD in History in Fall 2014.

My own research tends to focus on 19th century American culture, but I hope to cover a variety of DC’s times and topics here. Washington has an incredibly rich history spanning over two centuries. It’s important as not only the nation’s capital, but also a center of culture and a place many people call home. Its history and culture is complex and fascinating, and I hope that the sum of my small contributions will both reveal and celebrate DC’s unique multifaceted nature.

A majority of pictures used on this blog are from the Library of Congress’s Prints & Photographs Online Catalog. I don’t own any of them, nor do I claim to. If you have questions about the source of a particular picture or its content, please feel free to ask and I’d be happy to share any info I have.
